Keeping your email out of spam filters
We all know how useful spam filters are when receiving mail, but what if the ones you send end up there? Here are a few thoughts to help your emails get through. Even more to the point they are more likely to be opened by cautious people.
  • Have a subject line. If you leave it blank, you are asking for trouble. Spell it properly.
  • Use non-suspicious words in the subject. 'Free', ' quote', 'trial'  are really bad as are words like 'fr@@', 'n*w' '$$$' and so on anywhere in your email. The biggest killer subject line is 'information you requested'.
  • Use a full name to be recognised. Emails just from 'Sue' are suspicious.
  • Send to a few recipients. A long list throws up alarms, especially if you are sending from one of the free web-based services like hotmail or gmail. If you want to send to loads of people, use one of the recognised bulk emailing services.
  • Include some text, not just an attachment.

Any two of the issues above and I won't open an email! Nor should the person you sent it to.

Time saving keyboard shortcuts
It's amazing just how many ways ther are to save time using your computer through hidden key combinations. Let's look at a few:

Web browsing:
navigation - Alt+left arrow takes you back a page, Alt+Right arrow forward a page

addresses - entering an address and then pressing Ctrl-Enter adds http:// and .com. So 'google' followed by Ctrl+enter becomes http://www.google.com

address bar - To jump to the address bar press F6

full screen - F11 toggles full screen on and off

Text editing

Cursor movement - Ctrl-Arrow moves word left/right or line up/down

Selecting text - Hold the shift key down while moving the cursor

Cut, copy and paste text - Shift-Del to cut, Ctrl-Ins to copy, Shift-Ins to paste

Keeping your computer secure
More and more of us have laptops, netbooks or other portable computersd as our main machines. So how do you keep that data safe if something happens to your device?.

If it breaks, then you have that recent backup - don't you?

But what if it is stolen? User passwords are great to stop casual use but won't stop anyone getting at your data by taking the disc out. So we need to secure the disc.

Windows users with the more expensive versions of Vista or 7can try bitlocker that encrypts the whole disc. This has the advantage that it is unseen by the user as the computer is the password. However, if you lose the machine you have lost the 'password'.

One of the most interesting independent alternatives is Truecrypt. A free open source program, it creates a file on your computer that needs a password to open into which you put your confidential files. When you open the file, the computer sees it as another drive letter.

So if your computer disappears at least you know that other eyes won't see your information.

Is your computer getting a bit slow?
If your computer is starting to run slowly, here are a few easy things to try:

  1. Remove any programs you don't use or need

  2. Defragment the discs (might take all night)

  3. Download and run spybot search and destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org

  4. delete temporary files (cache) from your web browser
